History of Lake Havasu City
Who would think to build an entire community around a lake that is literally in the middle of the desert? Robert McCulloch, that's who! The owner of an outboard motor manufacturer, McCulloch is rumored to have discovered this jewel of the desert while flying over land to scout locations to test his motors. In order to entice people to come to Lake Havasu to see the potential city he saw sprouting there, Mr. McCulloch worked out a deal to buy the London Bridge that was set to be demolished in the UK in 1968. He had it carefully deconstructed, shipped to Lake Havasu and carefully reconstructed it in Lake Havasu City. This brought the attention Mr. McCulloch wanted to the city and buyers began to come. At first, there was a small trickle of interest, but this grew into a steady stream in the mid to late 1990s. Currently, Lake Havasu City is a bustling town full of vibrant people.
Lake Havasu Schools
Students living in Lake Havasu homes are served by the Lake Havasu Unified School District. The LHUSD supervises six elementary, three middle and three high schools. One of these high schools, Havasuonline, is an online program. There are also four charter schools that cater to Lake Havasu students. Two private schools provide an alternative to public education for parents. Mohave Community College operates a campus in Lake Havasu City as well.
Things to See & Do in Lake Havasu
With over 300 days of sunshine a year, you can imagine that the outdoors is a veritable playground in Lake Havasu real estate. The city's namesake is a great place to swim, fish, waterski, go boating or simply float on. But, the lake is only one part of this very active community.
The surrounding miles of desert allow for great hiking, biking, sandrailing and ATV adventures. Lots of people love to camp at the lake or completely independently in the desert.
There are four fantastic golf courses in Lake Havasu City: Bridgewater Links (at the London Bridge Resort), Havasu Island Golf Course (at the Nautical Inn), London Bridge Golf Club and The Refuge Golf Club. These are all great courses for golfers of all levels. Most of the courses open at sunrise for all day play.
For those looking for retail therapy, there are plenty of wonderful boutique shops as well as a brand new mall in the city's outskirts, complete with a state-of-the-art movie theater. And you are never at a loss for something to eat. There is a restaurant for just about any taste.
